How to work out how much material you need

The same three steps work for gravel, mulch, soil and sand.

1. Measure the area

Multiply length by width in feet to get square feet. For odd shapes, split the area into rectangles and add them up.

2. Choose the depth

Mulch usually goes 2 to 3 inches deep. Gravel paths need 2 to 4 inches, and driveways 4 to 6 inches.

3. Convert to cubic yards

Area × depth in feet ÷ 27 gives cubic yards. Add 5 to 10 percent extra for waste and settling.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers on quantities, spacing and coverage.

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard of gravel covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.

How much mulch do I need for a garden bed?

One cubic yard of mulch covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep. A 2 cubic foot bag covers about 8 square feet at the same depth.

How many pavers do I need for a patio?

Divide the patio area by the area of one paver, then add about 10 percent for cuts and breakage. Remember to order base gravel and sand as well.

How far apart should fence posts be?

Most wood fences use a post spacing of 6 to 8 feet, measured centre to centre. Use the fence post calculator to even out the spacing across your whole run.
