How to Calculate Concrete for Steps

Concrete stairs can be estimated by dividing the stair shape into simple rectangular sections. This calculator estimates a typical solid, stepped concrete stair profile with uniform risers and treads, plus an optional rectangular base beneath the stairs.

Concrete stair volume formula

For a solid stepped profile, calculate the volume of each horizontal step layer and add them together. For N steps, uniform rise R, tread depth D, and stair width W:

Stair volume = W × D × R × [N × (N + 1) ÷ 2]

Add the optional base volume, calculated as width × total horizontal run × base thickness. This model assumes the base sits beneath the entire stair footprint and does not overlap the stepped profile.

How many bags of concrete do you need?

Convert the estimated volume to cubic feet, add the waste allowance, and divide by the yield printed on the concrete bag. Round up to the next whole bag.

Tips for accurate estimates

  • Measure the stair width, individual riser height, and tread depth carefully.
  • Use the number of risers, not the number of visible tread surfaces, as the step count.
  • Include a base only if you are pouring a separate slab beneath the steps.
  • Complex stairs, hollow forms, landings, curved steps, and stairs poured against existing structures need separate volume calculations.
  • Confirm local stair dimensions, reinforcement, footing, drainage, and structural requirements before construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much concrete do four steps need?

The amount depends on the stair width, riser height, tread depth, and base thickness. Enter those dimensions above to estimate the volume and bags required.

Does this calculator include a concrete base?

Yes. You can enter a base thickness or set it to zero. The calculator treats the base as a separate rectangular slab below the stair profile.

Should I add extra concrete?

A 5–10% allowance can be a reasonable starting estimate for a straightforward pour. Irregular forms or difficult placement may require more.
