Use the thickness specified for your project. Four inches is a common planning example.
Extra material for spillage and minor variations in the base.
Bag estimates use approximate yields; check your product label.

Optional Material Cost Estimates

Enter your local prices to compare a bagged-concrete estimate with a ready-mix estimate. Leave a price at zero if you don’t want to estimate that option.

These are editable example prices, not live supplier quotes. Delivery, taxes, minimum order charges, labor, and equipment may cost extra.

How to Calculate Concrete for a Sidewalk

To estimate concrete, measure the sidewalk’s length and width, then determine the slab thickness. Convert all three measurements to feet before calculating volume when using US customary units.

1. Calculate the sidewalk area
Area = Length × Width
2. Calculate concrete volume
Cubic feet = Area in square feet × Thickness in feet
3. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards
Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27
4. Add a waste allowance
Order volume = Base volume × (1 + Waste percentage ÷ 100)

Example: A 30-Foot by 4-Foot Sidewalk

Suppose your sidewalk is 30 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 4 inches thick, with a 10% waste allowance.

  • Area: 30 × 4 = 120 square feet.
  • Thickness in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 feet.
  • Base volume: 120 × 0.3333 ≈ 40 cubic feet.
  • Base volume in cubic yards: 40 ÷ 27 ≈ 1.48 cubic yards.
  • With 10% waste: 40 × 1.10 = 44 cubic feet, or approximately 1.63 cubic yards.

The calculator uses your actual entered values and rounds bag quantities up to whole bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

How thick should a concrete sidewalk be?

Four inches is a common planning example for pedestrian sidewalks, but local codes, soil conditions, expected loads, and project specifications may require a different thickness.

How many bags of concrete do I need?

The quantity depends on the sidewalk’s dimensions, thickness, waste allowance, and the yield printed on the concrete bag. This calculator estimates 60 lb and 80 lb bags using approximate yields.

Should I include extra concrete?

A waste allowance can help account for small spills, uneven forms, and variations in the prepared base. The appropriate percentage depends on your project’s conditions.

What is the difference between cubic feet and cubic yards?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. Ready-mix concrete is commonly quoted by the cubic yard in the United States.

Does this estimate include labor and delivery?

No. The optional costs estimate concrete material only. Delivery charges, taxes, labor, tools, reinforcement, and base preparation are excluded.
